The word “Reiki” (Ray-Key) is a Japanese word that means universal life force energy. Rei means “universal”, “all-knowing”, “higher power”, “spirit”, or “soul”. It means the cosmic spiritual energy that penetrates everything and is present everywhere, from the infinite galaxies to the smallest atom. This connotes a spiritual consciousness and awareness of infinite oneness. Ki means “breath” or “life force energy” and the movement of this vital life force energy. Ki is comparable to the Chinese Qi or Chi and the Hindu Prana. It is also the same as the Christian experience of God in the physical body called the Holy Spirit. Ki is also described as a subtle electromagnetic force flowing through the body. It is the Breath of Life breathed by God into the first human who then became a living being. Putting the two syllables of the word together, we can define Reiki as spiritually guided life force energy.
Chakra (cakra in Sanskrit) means “wheel” and refers to energy points in your body.
The human body contains hundreds of locations where there is focused and concentrated energy. There are, however, seven major energy centers, commonly referred to as “chakras”. Chakra is a Sanskrit word that means “wheel”. The chakras are similar to wheels, in that they are spinning vortexes of energy. They are centers of force, located within our etheric body, through which we receive, transmit and process life energies.
Each Chakra in the body is recognized as a focal point of life force relating to physical, emotional, mental and spiritual energies. The chakras are the network through which body, mind and spirit interact as one holistic system.
