Discovering Reiki
The word “Reiki” (Ray-Key) is a Japanese word that means universal life force energy. Rei means “universal”, “all-knowing”, “higher power”, “spirit”, or “soul”. It means the cosmic spiritual energy that penetrates everything and is present everywhere, from the infinite galaxies to the smallest atom. This connotes a spiritual consciousness and awareness of infinite oneness. Ki means “breath” or “life force energy” and the movement of this vital life force energy. Ki is comparable to the Chinese Qi or Chi and the Hindu Prana. It is also the same as the Christian experience of God in the physical body called the Holy Spirit. Ki is also described as a subtle electromagnetic force flowing through the body. It is the Breath of Life breathed by God into the first human who then became a living being. Putting the two syllables of the word together, we can define Reiki as spiritually guided life force energy.
The word “Reiki” is usually used to identify a particular system of healing. This system is the Usui System of healing, named after Mikao Usui who rediscovered the method after many years of research and meditation. Traditional Usui Reiki is the basis of all other varieties of Reiki.
Reiki is simple to learn, totally non-invasive, safe, natural, effective, holistic, and powerful yet gentle. Healing is accomplished by a “laying on of hands” in which the life force energy is transferred from the practitioner to the recipient. The practitioner is simply a channel of the universal life force energy that flows from an unlimited source, not from the practitioner. An incredible fact about Reiki is that one is not depleted nor drained by giving Reiki; rather one is energized as the life force flows through the giver to the receiver.
